Is it okay to feel happy when the world is falling apart around us?
These are extremely challenging times indeed. A virus that has killed thousands with no concrete end in sight, isolation from the arms of loved ones, uncertainty around bills, careers, stability, racial tensions and sadness around issues that have no business still being an issue in a modern world. The cracks of oppression and racial injustice have yet again split wide open. So amidst all this grief, sadness, and anger — is it okay to be happy?
Experts agree that being happy amongst so much heaviness is a sign of a healthy and balanced approach to challenging times. Waiting for all conditions to be ‘perfect’ or resume normalcy may never come about.
It’s common during these times to feel stressed for oneself and your life, as well as the world and for other human beings. Yet, we can also in the same breath feel grateful to still have a job, thankful for where we live, and appreciate the small things in our own lives. We don’t have to choose just one way to be and feeling happy that it’s a beautiful sunny day outside does not mean you’ve forgotten about or neglect to feel pain and sorrow as well.
Resilient people are also inspiring and by continuing to find things to be grateful for, you’re setting the pace that leaves room for both acknowledgement of grief and a life with HOPE.
Without the hope bringers change is not possible. Just think of important people in history who in challenging times focused on hope such as Nelson Mandela who forever kept his dignity and kindness despite his unjust imprisonment.
What’s more, remaining happy and positive can also boost your immune system — pretty important element during a global health pandemic.
Until next time,
N.
